Small Decor Changes Make a BIG Difference

Want A Decor Change Without Breaking The Bank?

When looking to spice up a room or take it to ‘another level’ you don’t have to spend a fortune.  I’m going to tell you how I made small decor changes that made a big difference in my beauty room.  I recently used a room in my house and changed it into a beauty room.  I started with sanding and varnishing the wood floor then I started painting the wall.  I purchased my paint from Home Depot and the paint department was very helpful.  If you’re like me, and you go into the paint department, walk the aisle and all you see are paint cans, then do what I did, just tell the associate what you need & they’ll choose the right can for your purpose.  So I chose to go with the colors gray, silver and turquoise.   Check out my blog entitled Sparkling Painted Glitter Walls to see the finished product.

So with the walls and floor completed, I needed to add small touches to give the room decor a ‘POP’.  I’ve been working on my beauty room for some time now. I feel like it’ll never get done, but I am making progress.  First I customized a Billy Bookcase from IKEA by attaching molding to the top and it totally looks like a new bookshelf.  I also painted the back wall to match my Silver Chevron wall img_4749paint pattern (img_4747without the glitter). That little upgrade was harder to do than the molding (the bending over was taxing on my back).  In order to paint the back wall I had to lay the bookcase down on the floor.  Your other option is taking the back off to do this step (but I didn’t want to destroy the holes where the nails are).  I used the same stencil that I used for the wall and I painted the Chevron pattern with the same design color as the wall.  My room is small in dimension and does not have a ceiling light so I placed the IKEA Jansjo LED work lamp on top and used two which is more than enough lighting for that space.

Wall Art

One thing I wanted to add but didn’t want to spend a lot of money on is, Wall Art.  So, I went to a local thrift store and thumbed through what seemed like a thousand picture frames. As I looked through the selection, I knew I wanted a wood frame, but the color was not important at this point because I knew I could spray paint it to whatever color I wanted.  So, fortunately, I found a white 8X10 wood picture frame. Parts of it had turned yellow, but no worries. Besides it only cost me .50 cent.  I had already found an image to put in the frame, but the image was only 5X7 so I needed a photo mat to complete the look.  I went to Michael’s and purchased a white photo mat for about $3, but didn’t really like it at that stage.  So I thought, what if I glittered the Chevron pattern onto the photo mat?  It came out nicely but my advice to you if you decide this, don’t use the painter’s tape for your guide, it’s still too strong and will peel off some of the paper and glitter.  But I patched it up and it looks great.

For the image, all I did was search google for a turquoise beauty sign and I had a plethora of choices. You can achieve the smallest decor change without breaking the bank.

Gourmet Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookies

Gourmet Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookies

How to Make Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookies

Researchers and scientists have said for decades that chocolate is an aphrodisiac.  So I think its appropriate to offer guests to a wedding shower or a wedding reception the ultimate treat, CHOCOLATE wrapped in chocolate.

Supplies Needed:

1-2 pkgs of Original Oreo Cookies (36 cookies per pack, you may want to save the broken cookies for later)

1-3 Bags of Chocolate Candy Melts (Color of your choice)

Crisco Shortening

Microwaveable bowl

Spatula

Plain Cookie Chocolate Mold (purchase on Amazon)

Instructions:

Place approximately 1 C of Candy Melts and 1 tsp of shortening into a microwaveable bowl.  until almost all melted.  Microwave in 30 second increments (stirring in between).  Only microwave til candy melts are soft, then stir till chocolate is smooth.  Chocolate should be thin as pudding.  To prevent the chocolate from over cooking, only heat ingredients so that you can manually stir to assist the chocolate in the melting process.

Pour chocolate to cover the bottom of the cookie mold, then place cookie in the center of mold.  Pour chocolate to cover the cookie.  Fill the rest of the mold with chocolate & repeat for the other 5 molds. Be sure to push the cookie down slightly to avoid air bubbles.  Once the mold is full, place in freezer until stiff. After chocolate has set, remove cookie from mold.  If temperature in home is warm, place chocolate covered cookies back into refrigerator until ready to decorate.  At this stage you can leave them as is, or prepare them for decorating.

coocoooooo

If you are choosing to decorate the cookie, use the same chocolate melting procedure as above.  The decorative chocolate should be a coordinating color.  Pour the chocolate in plastic Ziploc sandwich bag.  To decorate cookies, line cookies up closely on a sheet of parchment paper (wax paper) like an assembly line.   Cut a small bottom corner of the sandwich bag, but hold the bag so that it doesn’t leak until you’re ready to decorate.  Quickly drip chocolate from left to right across the cookie until decorated to your liking.  Let the chocolate drizzle across in lines or a  Zig-Zag pattern.

Place cookies back into the refrigerator to set, then sit out to serve as they become room temperature

Back To School/College Must Haves

Heading Back to School/College

It’s that time of year when the playgrounds become empty and the classroom is consumed by the chatter of girls and boys gathered in one place to learn something new, and the school speed zones become active.  Its that time of year when parents find waking a child up in the morning is a theatrical production.  Whatever change the return to school brings, you’ll need to stock up on some things in preparation of the school year.

Every student from Kindergarten to College needs certain items, supplies, and accessories that will get them off to a great start.  Speaking of Kindergarten, I remember being in Kindergarten with my lunch box.  I had a pink Barbie lunchbox.  It had a Thermos in it and I was happy to show it off everyday.  So, no matter who your child likes as a TV character you should send them off happy knowing they have something they love.  I’ve also listed a sports lunchbox for kids or adults who love sports, you can take this along with you.  If you have a child that is crazy for the move FROZEN, I’ve got a great backpack and lunchbox set below.  Maybe you want to help your child decompress after an intense day at school, I found a cute Frozen Stationary Set they could love.

If you have a college student that needs bed sheets, portable shower tote, pop-up mesh laundry hamper, smart phone charging station with USB outlet multiplier and dual surge protector, bed risers for extra storage under the bed, A 6 pocket bedside storage mattress Book Remote Caddy, Locking Storage Box, Clip-On Laptop Lamp, Soap Box, Shower and Water Sandals and Toothbrush Holder.  Maybe you want to send your student a care package, there is a plethora of things you could send, checkout Pinterest for inspiration.

Below is a list of items you should consider purchasing from Amazon with their Prime Membership.

Upholstered Headboard with Added Bling

I don’t remember when it happened or how, but I’ve been without a headboard on my bed for at least 10 years.  It never use to bother me, but now its a problem.  When my pillows fall between the wall and the mattress I just get OCD and can’t cope without it any longer.  So, I’ve been (window) shopping for a headboard. Initially I just shopped for all types of head boards.  About a year ago I fell in love with the upholstered look so I specifically shopped for upholstered head boards.  Talk about sticker-shock, I was overwhelmed by the prices of these things. In this article I will show you an Upholstered  Headboard with Added Bling

I had a major fail when I built a headboard that didn’t meet my standards.  Even when I D.I.Y., there are times when my skills don’t meet my standards.  Let me tell you how I built it, then we’ll move on to the Phabulous headboard I just purchased.

I went to a thrift store and saw this headboard and thought it would allow me to build on it, but still remain light in weight.  WRONG!!! Well, sorta!  I purchased two pieces of plywood without considering their thickness when put together, and I attached them to the headboard.  After adding the foam, material and bling I was totally unhappy with what I saw.  This headboard is super tall and totally heavy.  It is absolutely the most hideous thing I’ve ever made.  I’ll insert pictures of me making it, but at the time of creating this post I’m not sure if I’ll show the finished product, yet.

So, I started saving up my money for the one headboard I wanted but couldn’t afford.  Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait long.  I was walking through TJ Maxx on my break at work and there it was.  MY HEADBOARD!! Ok, so it didn’t have the bling I wanted but I saw potential for bling, especially at a discounted price.  If I only could get the thing home without having to rent a truck.  I tried loading it on my SUV but that didn’t work.  Thankfully, I have a nephew that’s like a son to me. He always makes time for his auntie & this was no exception.  I called him and he came directly up to the store and took my headboard home for me.

  • Upholstered Headboard
    Before Adding Bling

So I get the headboard up the stairs, but I knew I had to bling it out before I could attach it to my bed.  So I purchased some Bling Gems and attached them with E-6000 glue and by using a hot glue gun.  I absolutely love it.
